In Mexico's public school system, children who are not enrolled on time can permanently lose their spot. In communities like Lomas de la Primavera, where extreme poverty makes timely enrollment nearly impossible, this means many children never attend school at all.
Without elementary school, there is no path to middle school, high school, or formal employment. The result is generational: adults in this community who missed their chance as children cannot read or write today. Their own children now face the same impossible odds.
